Medical Coder Certifications

Testing and certification, for proficiency in medical coding, medical billing, health information management and and other administrative medical office skills, which is voluntary in the United States, are widely available through organizations such as, for example, the AAPC, who certifies individuals who qualify in medical coding, medical auditing and medical compliance in physician offices, clinics, outpatient facilities and hospitals. Their certificants must prove knowledge of medical coding including the correct application of ICD-9-CM, CPT®, HCPCS Level II and modifier coding assignments to earn industry’s most recognized credentials such as

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC®)
  • Certified Professional Coder-Hospital Outpatient (CPC-H®)
  • Certified Professional Coder-Payer (CPC-P®)
  • Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC®)
and other AAPC specialty medical coding certifications designed for experienced coders.

Another widely recognized and highly respected certification provider for those in medical coding and health information professions (HIM) is the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), a not-for-profit professional association that has been serving HIM professionals since 1928. Health information management (HIM) professionals work in a variety of different settings and job titles. and other valuable credentials which are in high demand.

  1. I am interested in getting a certification in Medical coding/billing.  There are so many schools, it's hard to choose.  Taking on line courses will work best with my schedule.  Can anyone recommend a good on line school that isn't a scam?
